Widgets

Add a widget to the Lock Screen
  1. Touch and hold your Lock Screen until Customize appears.
  2. Tap Customize, then Lock Screen.
  3. Tap the widget area under the clock (or the line above it for a one-line widget).
  4. Find LockWords and tap the widget you want: cards, Art of the Day, Sky & Day or Word Progress.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: the Widgets tab in the app shows every widget with your content and opens these steps for each one.

Add a widget to the Home Screen

Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget. Search for LockWords, swipe to the size you want and tap Add Widget. The medium and large Art of the Day widgets have the quiz buttons.

Use LockWords in StandBy

Turn your iPhone on its side while it charges. Touch and hold the widget area, tap +, and add a small LockWords widget. At night StandBy shows widgets in red to keep the room dark.

Show one pack on one widget

Touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget and pick a pack. Without a pinned pack the widget mixes everything you selected in the app.

Change how often the card changes

In Settings choose every 30 minutes, every hour (the default), every 3 or 6 hours, or once a day. Cards change on the clock and work offline. iOS decides the exact moment a widget redraws, so it can be a minute or two late.

The widget is empty or doesn't update

Open LockWords once so it can prepare today's cards, then lock your iPhone. If the widget still looks stale, remove it and add it again. Low Power Mode can delay widget updates.

Packs & collections

Choose what you see

Open Library and switch between Words & Wisdom, Art and Sky & Day. Tap + next to any card pack to add it to your mix. In Settings, Show on Today turns each collection on or off in the app.

What does "I know it" do?

It takes a word out of the rotation, so you see words you're still learning. The Word Progress ring on the Lock Screen counts the words you know. You can undo it from the card.

Where are my saved cards?

In Library, tap the heart at the top. Saved cards and artworks are there, newest first.

Which languages does LockWords speak?

The app is in English and 28 other languages, including the artwork stories. The word, verse and quote cards stay in English, because many of them are about English itself.

Art quiz

How does the painting quiz work?

Each day Art of the Day picks a work and asks one question about it: who made it, when it was made, or, for botanical plates and old maps, which plant or place it shows. Answer on a medium or large Home Screen widget, or in the app. The answer stays hidden until you give one. Right answers in a row build your streak.

Where do the artworks come from?

Every work is in the public domain and comes from museum open-access collections, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Rijksmuseum, the National Gallery of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Met. Each artwork screen credits the museum and links to its page.

Sky & Day

Set your place for sunrise and sunset

Open Sky & Day and tap Choose a place. Type your city, or tap Use my approximate location. You can change it later in Settings, under Place for Sky & Day. The Moon's phase and the week number work without a place.

Location is turned off

You don't need it: search for your city instead. To allow it, open the iPhone Settings app and find LockWords: on iOS 18 and later tap Apps, then LockWords; on iOS 17 tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then LockWords. Choose While Using the App. LockWords asks for approximate location only.

Purchases

Is there a subscription?

No. Packs, collections and All Packs are one-time purchases. Affirmations, the Impressionism art pack and Sky & Day come with the app, and the other packs let you try their first cards.

Restore my purchases

In the app open Settings and tap Restore Purchases, signed in with the Apple ID you used to buy. Purchases are also shared with your Family Sharing group.

I bought All Packs before 2.0. Do I get the Art packs?

Yes. All Packs includes every pack added later, and that includes all Art packs.

Refunds

Apple handles payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
